Chapter 296: First Confrontation
Chapter 296: First Confrontation
Before the army could clash with each other, Melvin and Tristram leapt off their horses and shot towards one another.Their aura-cloaked weapons met, and a shockwave ran through the ground, forming a crater beneath them.
The commanders’ horses raised their front legs in the air and stumbled back from the impact, while both armies staggered from the quake of their attack.
Golden flames flared around Bael’s feet. He slammed the ground, killing the momentum and steadying the entire army.
However, as the duke’s army had no one to do the same for them, those at the front fell on their butts, and the knights of Leonara charged forward with vigor.
"For Leonara!" the knights shouted as their blades shone with aura flames of various colors.
They rushed forward, and the soldiers also hardened themselves for the war. With a shuddering war cry, they moved with their weapons raised.
The two armies met, and just as Bael had expected, the living shadows, which now had a direct connection to Leonara’s knights, entered the shadows and attacked them.
Their attacks were fast and unpredictable for regular humans; however, for superhumans, they weren’t that big of a deal unless attacked from multiple sides.
They either dodged or blocked their sword thrusts and swung their aura-clad swords at them. As the swords neared the shadows, the area brightened by their light solidified into dark crystal, which broke apart like a lump of sand upon impact.
Dark crystals flew everywhere as the shadows were cleaved into two, but at the same time, the shadows proved why they were deadly. The moment the knights killed the ones at the front, another wave of shadows attacked them and managed to steal the lives of a few of the knights.
Over a dozen superhumans lost their lives in a moment, and panic began to spread across the army.
At the same time, the duke’s soldiers and knights rose to their feet and pushed forward.
Seeing them, the faces of Leonara’s knights turned grim, and their hearts began to beat loudly.
They were sure about having to deal with other superhumans and the shadows; however, they failed to consider that half of the duke’s army was shadows, so they didn’t have enough superhumans to fight them. All they needed was to stay calm and focus on slaughtering the shadows before the shadows could slay them.
Holias, who was trapped in a battle against Lion, looked at the two armies from the corner of his eye, and Lion’s sword slammed into his, sending him stumbling back.
"I wasn’t expecting you to have enough guts to come forward, rank two," Lion said with a smug smile spread across his face.
Hearing the taunt, Holias’s face twisted into fury, and he muttered with a forced, cracking smile, "Do you still find pleasure in the ranks that are given based on connection rather than skills?"
Lion slashed his sword at him, and yellow thunder followed his blade. "So, you still believe that little lie your master fed you to make you his loyal dog."
Holias lifted his curved sword and spun it, swirling wind blades gathered around it, and redirected the yellow thunder away from him. "Heh. It’s easier to call someone a liar than to accept your own inferiority."
Thunder snakes and wind blades met each other as the two classmates fought each other with hate and contempt burning in their eyes.
Far away, the ground trembled as the two chief commanders shaped the aura itself and forged the battlefield to their liking.
As their weapons met, cracks spread across the ground, and the air was cleaved by the sharpness of their sword and glaive.
Melvin hacked with the solidified aura covering his armor and sword while Tristram attacked as the aura churned at the tip of his glaive.
The very air around them seemed ready to tear everything into pieces, while in the distance, the soldiers fought one another with pure skill.
Fire slashes, water shields, wind blades, thunder spears, mist screens, and much more flew around the area as they used the ether arts that they had trained throughout their lives.
Jareb and Henry were also part of those soldiers, and after being under Bael for a few days, they were already much more skilled than before.
Bael didn’t know when, but at some point, Predator’s Eyes began showing him the weak points in the target’s techniques, which he used to train them.
And at the moment, he was using it to deal with soldiers who were coming his way. He wanted to leave them alive because, after all of this, he would’ve made them part of Leonara’s army, but because they no longer had any loyalty to their motherland, he couldn’t trust them.
Those who came across him fell within a few attacks. As for why he was taking so long — his focus was entirely on Henry and Jareb.
’I had noticed it before as well, but their styles are similar; the only difference is that Henry’s is more about rhythm while Jareb’s is based on explosive power,’ Bael concluded as he stepped back and swung his right hand that held a dagger.
"Ugh!" A short groan resounded beside him as he plunged his dagger into the bottom of an enemy’s head.
He pulled out the dagger, and the soldier crashed onto the ground, blood pooling around him.
He looked at the soldier for a moment before he swung the blood off his dagger and moved to the next.
He could finish all of this in a moment, but to do that, he needed to kill the duke who had yet to show himself.
His gaze went past the army and landed on the four nebulae standing at the far end.
They were the nebulae that belonged to the duke, and all of them were watching their brethren die with impassive expressions on their faces.
Seeing them, Bael’s jaw tightened, and he thought, ’Should I just end all of this?’
